About this demo reel
Extreme Diesel Disaster was made during the process of beta testing Leonard J. Paul’s Wwise demo reel 500 course, for his online School of Video Game Audio:



///// I extensively modified a level within Cube game engine to fit what I wanted to show using Wwise: you are in a killing game show and your mission is to take everything out. You are a rolling arsenal capable of operating over and underwater. You are an extreme diesel-powered mayhem machine.

///// Player sounds were mainly based on a recording of an old noisy printer (for the body servos and such) combined with engine sounds I recorded from a Volkswagen Scirocco R engine (for the movement sounds).
The dynamic movement sound is achieved by metering the player footstep output and using it to RTPC the pitch and volume of an engine loop. Mixing this with engine revving sounds for the jumping action got me a pretty decent military-grade vehicle movement simulacrum in the end.

///// The gun sounds were concocted from various library sources (both weapon and non-weapon sounds) and brought to life by Wwise’s basic sample playback functions (e.g. Rocket Launcher sound is enhanced by triggering two equal samples with slight delay and pitch variation relative to each other, causing some appropriate phase effects which are different each time.) Guns also got top priority within the volume hierarchy, in order to underline the chaotic loudness one would feel if engaged in an all-out gun firing rampage.

///// Underwater ambiance is achieved by a long attenuation curve, drastic low-pass filtering, lower pitch, and mixing every movement with an extensive set of underwater samples I recorded both at a pool and in a bath tub. There is also a constant underwater ambiance loop playing.

///// Environmental reverb has been applied throughout the different parts of the level to heighten spatial realism, and enemy sounds are supposed to be hellish but almost pinball-like, and generally lighter than the player’s. I also recorded myself for both player and enemy vocal samples, being that enemy vocals were heavily processed in order to sound like mechanical dummies.



These were the base ideas involved in making a gameplay demo piece with no story and rough graphics come to life using Wwise and a bit of imagination.

Other game audio demos

Some of my previous work in game audio:

- The first piece is a music taken from Freeway Fury 2's hard-hitting soundtrack, which I produced and recorded live with my band IMPÉRIO DO SOM.

- Second is an example of dialog / speech production: it's an audio story set in the Killer7 game universe which I wrote, had translated to Japanese, recorded and produced (it features a set of environmental recordings I've made during a trip to Vietnam and the voice of Yuko Kase, a Japanese vocal talent I had the opportunity to record personally).

- The bottom two videos are taken from BEEP and Aquatic Tales. Among other things, audio work for these games involved vocal recording sessions with my young nieces and the production and recording of a 30 min. orchestral soundtrack which sadly saw Aquatic Tales get cancelled before launch.

Vigi

Vigi

Vigi stands for video-gif, a format built on 4 second mini-looping videos which can be captured and instantly built upon by both the author and everyone he or she is sharing their vigis with.
I was the concept's co-creator / company co-founder, and worked on Vigi as project manager, sound designer and interface builder.

The application has been developed remotely by three people (we're in Lisbon, London and Fukui), on a zero budget, took us about eight months to get to release state, and has been live in the App Store since last November. Two months after that, Vine came out with their somewhat similar format and the ample resources of Twitter behind it, but still we were actually the first to come up with the mini-looping video format, have a rather different social approach and managed to gather a small community of users thus far.
